Good Governance - confidence that money is well spent

We believe that good governance is vital to honouring the trust placed in us by our donors to spend their money effectively, transparently and with integrity.

As a collaboration between the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness and Standard Chartered, we combine the expertise of the world’s foremost experts in global eye-care delivery, the experience and practice of IAPB’s membership partners, and the risk management, financial acumen and global, on-the-ground reach of the Bank.

Our multi-tier governance structure ensures we operate to the highest standards of governance and probity. We believe it is essential to maintaining our integrity - and the confidence of everyone we work with.

Our strict controls make sure all funds for Seeing is Believing (SiB) are used effectively and transparently to deliver projects on the ground with clear aims and objectives.  We draw on the expert knowledge of our partners within the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) to choose the right projects for investment. We use strict criteria in developing and selecting projects in order to ensure they address need, have a sustainable impact and deliver as much benefit as possible.

Our governance framework has four elements.

  • Group - focuses on our strategy, overall effectiveness of governance, and Seeing is Believing policies; scrutiny of financial controls, risk management, planning and progress of our projects; day-to-day project management of SiB - fundraising, communications, financial management, stakeholder engagement and research.
  • Business and Regional - committees set up to drive regional fundraising; oversee and advise on fundraising and engagement; coordinate initiatives across countries and businesses, and provide senior business sponsorship to events.
  • Country - Standard Chartered Bank’s country network of Country CEOs, Seeing is Believing Country Coordinators, and local staff, overseeing progress with local projects.
  • International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) - partners with Standard Chartered Bank in the Seeing is Believing initiative, IAPB provides expert advice to SiB, ensuring that SiB benefits from knowledge of best practice as well as vetting and providing specialist eye care input to all funding decisions. IAPB houses the charity account for all funds donated to SiB and so all SiB projects must be fully compliant with IAPB’s charitable mission.

We expect all our committee members, partners in non-governmental-organisations and project staff to act with honesty, integrity and fairness. And we commit to act in accordance with the laws and customs of the countries in which we operate, upholding the highest standards of governance in order to ensure full accountability for funds use.
