Standard Chartered Bank in Japan donates 100 Million Yen on World Sight Day

28 October 2009

Standard Chartered staff in Japan, combined with generous donations from clients and the community have raised over 100 million Yen for Seeing is Believing in 2009.

The money raised will be spent in Indonesia where our partner Helen Keller International will set up a diabetic retinopathy screening programme as well as provide glasses and eye tests for schools in Jakarta.

Thousands of people, who have little or no access to eye care treatment, will benefit from this donation – transforming their lives and futures.

Staff voted for all donations to go to this key project. Patrick Gillot, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Japan, said “This is the first time we have pooled our donations for a specific project and I am delighted by the enthusiastic response of my staff.”

Richard Meddings, Chairman, Seeing is Believing said, “Seeing is Believing is close to the hearts of our staff, and World Sight Day is a great opportunity to bring them together to fundraise and raise awareness of avoidable blindness.”

Japan’s latest fundraising idea is an official Seeing is Believing t-shirt which should be available in retail shops across Tokyo soon.
