Last Hour pledge from thousands
1 February 2012
Standard Chartered employees pledged their last hour’s pay to preventing avoidable blindness, raising over US$720,000.
For every dollar donated, Standard Chartered matched it, dollar for dollar. This is the Bank’s latest fundraising initiative to help us reach our target of raising US$100 million by 2020, to improve access to eye-care across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Richard Meddings, Group Finance Director at Standard Chartered said, “Seeing is Believing continues to grow, increasing access to eye-care for millions around the world. This success is driven by the generosity of our employees, customers and suppliers. Thanks to those staff members who have chosen to donate their last hour’s pay for 2011, we’re now a step closer to our target.”
Why this money will help
Providing accessible and affordable eye-care will help the visually impaired to regain their sight. As a result, they will be able to work or study or support their families.
With a cataract operation costing just US$30, this makes the elimination of avoidable blindness a worthwhile cause for Standard Chartered staff to fundraise for.
If you would like to help restore someone’s sight, please donate.
