About the project
With our partners Sightsavers International, Seeing is Believing will help thousands of people afflicted by avoidable blindness and eyesight difficulties.
Dhaka is inhabited by 12 million people, 30% of whom live in squalid, unsanitary conditions in urban slums. These people do not have adequate access to eye care facilities.
Around 50,000 adults have cataracts in Dhaka and 20,000 surgeries are performed each year in the city. The majority of these surgeries are not being performed on the poor. Our project plans to rectify this imbalance and ensure that the neediest people in Dhaka receive the necessary eye care treatment.
Additionally, this programme will educate and create awareness of the eye care services available. It will ensure these services are sufficiently integrated into routine health services.
By 2012 we will have:
- Trained staff to deal with eye health issues,
- Examined almost 234,000 people,
- Performed 24,300 cataract surgeries,
- Distributed over 75,000 pairs of glasses,
- Created awareness about eye care.
