Now cured, Nasha encourages others to get treated

My story

Without knowing it, Nasha was making herself blind

One of Nasha’s most important jobs in her village in the Rift valley, Kenya, was making beads. These would be sold and also warn by members of the village tribe. The 35 year old started suffering from trichiasis in her eye, making it harder for her to do her job. Trichiasis is a condition where eyelashes grow inwards rather than out- something which needs surgery on as quickly as possible.

To relieve the pain, Nasha did what many of the Massai trichiasis sufferers do- use tweezers to get rid of the eyelashes. Nasha did not have a mirror to do this so asked her children to do it for her. What she didn’t realise, is that using tweezers actually makes trichiasis worse. It can  cause scarring to the cornea or even blindness.

How we helped
Thanks to a free eyecare clinic nearby, she had the eye-lid surgery that she so desperately needed. She’s also spreading word to other Maasai who have trichiasis and are using tweezers instead of getting surgery. “It is like a miracle, you are brought all the way from home and are treated free or charge. So i think this is an opportunity that should not be missed”.
