New hope for saving sight among China’s diabetics

Diabetes is on the rise in China – and with it, the risk of blindness.

About the project

Better-quality eye care is on the way for diabetics in four Chinese cities - through our project with eye care partners The Fred Hollows Foundation.

Together, we will help prevent blindness and restore sight to 3,000 diabetics in the densely-populated cities of Shanghai, Wuhan, Chengdu and Chansha.

Early detection and treatment can stop blindness caused by diabetes in its tracks. But many diabetics in China do not get the care they need to protect their vision.

By 2010, we will have:

  • Reached 400,000 people through prevention, treatment, screening and education about the risks of diabetic retinopathy.
  • Trained eye care providers and health professionals;
  • Improved early-detection and patient referral systems in hospitals and healthcare facilities.
  • Ensured a lasting legacy that helps prevent blindness in the diabetic community for years to come.

“Diabetes is like a freight train and the poorest people in the world are stuck right in the middle of the tracks. Blindness is one horrific consequence of diabetes, but with early intervention 98% of people can be helped.”
