A mother’s education helps saves youngest child’s sight
My story
Dewi, a housewife and mother of two has learnt that children with a deficiency in Vitamin A could be at risk of bad eyesight
Dewi regularly brings her one year old daughter Nadia to Posyandu every month for growth monitoring and other basic health services including the distribution of Vitamin A capsules.
Nadia's older brother Sakti did not receive the Vitamin A capsules until he was two because the family lived in a remote village called Yogyakarta. As a result he had slow growth and was not a very active child.
How we helped
Posyandu is a village health post working in conjunction with Seeing is Believing to provide Vitamin A capsules to children under five.
Through Posyandu, Dewi has learnt the importance of children taking Vitamin A and she says she wishes: "Vitamin A capsules were always available in Posyandu because it helps children to grow healthy, keeps the eyes healthy and improves their immunity".
Nadia has taken the vitamin since she was 11 months old and Dewi has notices how active she is compared with her brother at this age. She is also gaining weight and growing at a good speed.
Dewi knows that her two children have the best opportunity to have good eyesight thanks to Posyandu.
