Madhumla travels 600km to save her sight

My story

After a stone was thrown into Madhumla Mandal’s left eye, she was unable to see and had to drop out of school.

Her sight became so bad that she could not play with her friends and started to feel like an outcast. The family consulted a local doctor, but he could not help her and she became afraid to even go outside.

How we helped

Madhumla’s life was given a dramatic change thanks to our partners CBM. Madhumla and her family had to travel 600km by train and rickshaw to get to a specialist eye hospital in Biratnagar.

She was diagnosed with traumatic cataract and was fitted with an Intra-Ocular Lens, giving her back her sight.

Helping save Madhumla’s sight not only transformed her life, but also helped her family. Without the help she received from Seeing is Believing, her family would have been in financial ruin. Her father would have had to sell one of his 4 cows, which is not only a financial asset, but a lifeline to the family.

Madhumla is now happy and back at school and said, “I can now go outside again and play with my friends.”
