Nguyen Thi chose family over fear
My story
Too poor to afford treatment and afraid of surgery, Nguyen Thi lived with blindness for 8 years.
Nguyen Thi is 86 years old and lives with one of her daughters Ho Thi Bay in the Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. Bay's daughter had meningitis when she was only 5 months old and now suffers from regular fits and convulsions.
Because Nguyen Thi was blind, she was unable to help around the house or look after her granddaughter.
How we helped
Nguyen Thi realised that she had to restore her sight so that she could help Bay. Nguyen Thi was able to benefit from a free operation.
This was made possible because Nguyen Thi was one of the many people who underwent sight restorations during the annual subsidized cataract surgery campaign. Held at the Northern Regional Mountainous General Hospital of Quang Nam province, about 250 cataract surgeries are performed every year.
The annual campaign is one of the activities sponsored by Seeing is Believing via The Fred Hollows Foundation in Vietnam.
