Wedding day in sight for Christiana
My story
Christiana Jeremiah’s childhood was spent in darkness.
Born with cataracts in both eyes, Christiana was near-blind throughout her childhood.
There was no specialist school near her home in Nigeria. With no education she grew up with little chance of getting work. “I sat in the house, not able to do anything. I was looked after and guided by my mother,” she remembered.
It affected her confidence. Christiana didn’t think that anyone would want to marry her because she was blind.
How we helped
Christiana’s life was transformed when she was given cataract surgery and regained her eyesight, thanks to our project with partners Sightsavers International: the Kwara State Eye Care Programme.
Christiana, now 24, said, “I’m so happy. Since my operation, I have been able help my mother with chores like cleaning, cooking and washing.”
And now, her dream of a wedding day has also come true. “I am to be married!” she said. Christiana met her fiancé, 25-year-old farmer Moses after her eye surgery. “I am so happy to be getting married. All my family and friends will be there. I’m looking forward to having children,” she said, with a giggle.
Because she received treatment so late in life, Christiana will always have low vision. But she can now see well enough to live an independent life. “Thank you, thank you!”
