About the project

Life changing eye care is on the way for poor communities across India, thanks to our joint-partner project to provide 40 new Vision Centres by 2010.

Vision centres take vital eye care treatment out to the poorest people, living in remote areas far from healthcare facilities and hospitals.Sight-saving treatments are given to the blind, and those with eye disease.

Screening for potentially blinding eye diseases, spectacles and further treatment referrals are also provided. Working as ‘satellites’  in tandem with base hospitals, vision centres mean we can reach and help more people in need.

There are 45 million blind people worldwide – and cataract is the leading cause. But more than two-thirds of cases are preventable or treatable. For just $30 each, a simple 15-minute cataract operation can restore sight for around 17 million of the world’s blind people, most living in the poorest countries.

Restoring sight goes far beyond improving a person’s quality of life. It means they can play a full and active role in their family, their community and the wider economy.

Our technical partners LV Prasad Eye Institute are working on the Vision Centre Project with Aravind Eye Hospital, Sadguru Netra Chikitsalaya, Dr Shroff Charitable Eye Hospital and Venu Charitable Society

By the end of this project, we will have:

  • Established 40 Vision Centres where no eye care existed before
  • Saved sight for thousands with primary eye care treatments changing their lives
  • Made quality eye care affordable to the individual and the community
  • Provided a permanent, appropriate infrastructure to serve 50,000 people.
