The statistics on blindness are staggering, but people don’t go blind by the million- they go blind one by one.

For each person the impact is enormous. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood.

The figures are overwhelming. Help us to help others see by donating now.

The Event

On Saturday 21st May, members of staff from Group and UK Corporate Real Estate Services, will be fundraising for the Seeing is Believing Ghana Eye Clinic Project by participating in 500 Kilometres in the Square Mile with the intention of raising $10,000.

Working together, staff will cycle 500 kilometres in distance, on a circular course throughout the City of London (also known as The Square Mile) to raise money through sponsorship. The course distance is approximately 6.5 kilometres in length, so staff will have to ride many times around the course to reach the 500 kilometre goal. However as this is a team event no single rider will be required to ride the full distance on their own; although riders will be encouraged to complete as many laps as possible.

All money received with go to the Ghana Eye Clinic Project - further details of which can be seen below. The Bank will match every dollar raised, a great way to make a difference.

Ghana Eye Clinic project

Our Aim – Raise Funds $53K for Eye Clinic in Ghana by 31 JULY 2011

Avoidable blindness is a very real problem in Ghana where it is typically accorded a lower priority in the healthcare system and consequently the country has only a few specialist eye surgeries in main towns and cities.

The most widespread form of preventable blindness is Glaucoma, a disease which affects the optic nerve. Early diagnosis is vital, if not caught early this disease can lead to full blindness.

Through Seeing is Believing, the Banks global initiative to help tackle avoidable blindness, we aim to do the following:-

1. Develop an eye clinic housed in the Worawora hospital serving Krachi residents, to provide more complex eye treatment including surgery for Cataract

2. Upgrade the existing healthcare facilities in the village of Tokuroano to include an eye clinic outpost
