Alex Frost's Seeing is Believing

The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.

I've been racing triathlons for several years. This season I am guiding Dr Chris Goodwin, who is currently the European Champion in the TRI6 (visually impaired) category. We swim tethered together, we ride on a tandem, and then we run each holding a rope, with a good deal of pulling and barging!

This year Chris will be defending his European crown over a shorter (sprint) distance in Athlone, Ireland. He is also hoping for success at the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary in September. The big one is a half ironman race in Antwerp, Belgium in July: 1.9km of swimming, a 90K bike ride and a cheeky half marathon (21.1k) to finish. The aim is to break 5 hours which we are sure would be a British Record and, probably, a European Record as well for a visually impaired athlete over such a distance.

Acting as a guide has been enormously rewarding for me. It has also made me much more aware of the challenges facing visually impaired people but, perhaps more importantly, it has made me realise that anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
