The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.

We are TeamVision SCB - Sean Abbott, Bert de Guzman, Chris Mattern and Mara Symes - and we are thrilled to be competing in the Atacama Crossing on March 7th, 2010 in support of Seeing is Believing and to raise funds for the development of its new project in Brazil and Peru. 

The Atacama Crossing is part of RacingThePlanet’s 4 Deserts endurance series and is ranked by Time Magazine as one of the top ten most difficult races in the world.  With competitors from over 20 countries participating, this footrace spans 155 miles (250km) over seven days through Chile’s Atacama Desert, where each competitor will have to cover a marathon a day for the first four days, nearly 50 miles on the 5th/ 6th days (yes, that does mean running through the night!), followed by a 6-mile victory lap on the last day.  Water will be provided at checkpoints throughout the race (although it is heavily rationed), but no other supplies will be provided.  Therefore, everything needed for the week, from food to band aids to sleeping bags and equipment, will have to be carried in packs on our backs.  Essentially, imagine running a marathon over a mountain, in a desert, at high altitude, with a 20lb pack on, every day for a week!

Does this sound hard?  Actually, our message to you is quite the opposite.  We feel privileged to have the opportunity, indeed the luxury, to pursue this rigorous challenge while those who battle blindness, particularly in developing countries, face a very different challenge to fulfill even basic needs.  TeamVision SCB’s goal is to help people help themselves, and there is no better way to do that than to give someone back his or her sight.

TeamVision SCB members have collectively raised over $50,000 for Seeing is Believing by competing in previous 4 Desert races, and this time around we have targeted a goal of raising an additional $50,000.  With Standard Chartered matching every dollar raised, we have the rare opportunity to positively impact not just the lives of the sight restoration recipient, but also the lives of so many within his or her community - mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, wives and husbands, children and friends. 

Hopefully, this is where you come in.  By clicking on the donation button above and following the instructions, you can help to make a difference.  We know many of you have already adopted worthwhile charities, but we hope that you can take a moment to give, as little or as much as you can, and join us in helping someone to get back their sight and improve their chances to live a more fulfilling life.
