The statistics on blindness are staggering, but people don’t go blind by the million- they go blind one by one.

For each person the impact is enormous. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood.

The figures are overwhelming. Help us to help others see by donating now.

On the weekend of November 12th and 13th I will be taking part in the multi-stage, 265 Km, Tour de Bintan race. Fast and furious racing in the heat, humidity and rolling terrain of Bintan will make this a significant challenge.

I completed the race last year and vowed I would never ride it again! Despite my best intentions I am back, this time racing for charity. I am hoping to raise at least $2000 for ‘Seeing is believing’, a global initiative to help tackle avoidable blindness around the world.

Seeing is Believing funds projects that give access to eye care for underprivileged people - to improve health, economic prospects and quality of life, now and in the future.

SiB aims to raise US$ 20 million by 2012 to fund comprehensive and sustainable eye care services for 20 million people in the poorest areas of 20 cities across the globe.

Good luck David - I know how much you suffered last year, so all the best for the 2011 event! In comparison our 500 Kilometres in the Square Mile event pales into insignificance compared to the distance you will be riding in the heat and humidity! Still - I can't help but feel that toe clips and straps are the way forward and will help you immensely in this enormous challenge!
