About my charity

The statistics on blindness are staggering, but people don’t go blind by the million- they go blind one by one.

For each person the impact is enormous. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood.

The figures are overwhelming. Help us to help others see by donating now.

Each year, a full stage of the Tour de France opens up for amateur cyclists to race over the same routes battled over by the pros of cycling. The setting is generally one of the most challenging mountain stages of the whole Tour. The “Etape du Tour” has over the years become a challenge for amateur cyclists from all around the world.

This year’s Etape du Tour will be on the 11^th of July 2011, and will see riders tackling the French Alps starting from the town of Modane, with a finish at the summit of the legendary Alpe d’Huez. The course attacks three of France’s greatest road climbs – the Col du Telegraphe, the 2500m above sea level Col du Galibier and the Alpe d’Huez, a 14km road ascent at an average gradient of 8.5%.

Etape du Tour is an endurance event including approximately 3000 meters of positive climbing over a distance of 109km.

4 Standard Chartered Bank colleagues from New York, London, Paris, and Singapore will take part in this race – Paul Clifford, Lina Osman, Patrick Krasa, and Ben Arnott. The four of us would like to seize this opportunity to raise money for Seeing is Believing, the charity of the bank and the International Association for the Prevention of Blindness.

Seeing is Believing funds accession to eye care for underprivileged people in the developing world. Every five seconds, one more person somewhere in the world goes blind. Every minute, one more child goes blind, and 60% of these children will die within a year of going blind. Fortunately, 80% of blindness can be avoided, either through prevention or treatment. Just US$30 pays for a simple eye operation that can cure blindness and make a difference to the lives of those in need.

Your donations will be matched 1 to 1 by Standard Chartered Bank, and will provide a greater incentive and encouragement for us to cross that finish line at the top of Alpe d’Huez.
