About my charity

The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.

Long-distance running is my passion, having completed over 30 marathons and 4 ultramarathons (races exceeding 42km) worldwide. On 29th May 2010, I will be running the Singapore Adidas Sundown 84km ultramarathon to benefit a worthy charity called 'Seeing Is Believing'.

Every five seconds, someone, somewhere in the world goes blind. Every minute, one more child goes blind – and 60% of these children will die within a year.

There are up to 45 million of people already blind across the world. Without effective intervention, this is set to rise to 76 million by 2020.

More than 90% are in the developing world and deprived urban areas. The issue goes beyond health – it affects the livelihoods of individuals and the economic well-being of communities.

But 80% of blindness can be prevented or treated.

Seeing is Believing (SiB) is a global initiative to help tackle avoidable blindness.

SiB is a collaboration between Standard Chartered Bank and the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

SiB raises money and give practical support to prevent and treat avoidable blindness.

Every dollar raised is matched by Standard Chartered Bank.  So far, SiB has raised over US$17 million and helped more than two million people regain their sight. By 2014, SiB aims to have reached 32 million people through its projects.
