The statistics on blindness are staggering, but people don’t go blind by the million- they go blind one by one.

For each person the impact is enormous. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood.

The figures are overwhelming. Help us to help others see by donating now.

FM Sales South Africa have set themselves a challenge to cycle the Momentum 94.7 cycle challenge on the 20th November. 3 volunteers have put their hands up to take the challenge (scroll down for more about the Ride for a Purpose Campaign after the riders bios):

Dean Worrall - Head of FM Sales South Africa: Dean used to be a keen cyclist as a school boy, however after joining SCB a year ago he has yet to actually get on a bike. His containers however recently arrived in South Africa and his bike is said to be in Cape Town, with Dean being based in Johannesburg and currently living it up at the World Cup Rugby in New Zealand he remains an interesting contender for this 97.4km challenge (and yes its actually 97.4kms despite being called 94.7)!

Sam Sandiford - Director Structuring: Sam recently left Hong Kong and has also not actually ridden a bike since moving to South Africa in July. Sam does however have a state of the art carbon fibre bike that most pro-athletes would be proud to be seen on and has attended one or two spinning classes since his visitng girlfriend departed a week ago. Sam has also done a 20km race in Hong Kong (at low altitude) so should be well prepared for the Momentum Challenge.

Rochelle McCauley - Ass. Director FM Sales: As the challenge initiator, Rochelle has actually ridden a bike in recent history however a mountain bike and not a road bike. Rochelle remains optimistic about potentially beating Sam & maybe Dean but everyone will be a winner if we manage to raise our target amount for seeing is believing.

About the race: Why most of the 20 000-30 000 particpants ride for charity

The Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge encourages everyone to ride for a purpose, and to use the event to make a difference.

Many cyclists have used the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge as a platform to raise funds and awareness of causes for years and in 2010 this was formalised into the Ride for a Purpose campaign.

It recognises that participants are pushing themselves to achieve personal goals and suggests to all the cyclists who take part that it is simple and tremendously rewarding to attach a social goal to their ride too.

Whether a cyclist rides to raise funds for a charity, in memory of a loved one, to support a cause or to show that a disability is no impairment to living an active life, the idea is to add another dimension to the event, beyond the physical challenge.

The Ride for a Purpose campaign reflects the principles of Lead SA, which calls on South Africans to stand up, do the right thing and make a difference. By riding for someone or something else, cyclists can make an impact on their community.
