The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.

Hello All!!

As you may or may not know, I will be climbing to the roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, in a weeks time for Seeing is Believing, a charity fighting blindness which affects millions of people around our world.

Climbing to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa (5895m), will involve trekking 62km uphill on the Machame Route (also known as Whisky Route) over 6days, camping on the mountain in extreme weather conditions, and entering dangerously high altitudes.

To prepare for this I have been running, biking, walking, spinning and basically pushing myself to my physical limit….its been a challenge but hopefully I’m fit enough to do this…

Every five seconds, someone, somewhere in the world goes blind. Every minute, one more child goes blind – and 60% of these children will die within a year.

There are up to 45 million of people already blind across the world. Without effective intervention, this is set to rise to 76 million by 2020.

More than 90% are in the developing world and deprived urban areas. The issue goes beyond health – it affects the livelihoods of individuals and the economic well-being of communities.

But 80% of blindness can be prevented or treated.

Seeing is Believing has contributed to over 2.5 million sight restorations and has supplied vital preventative medicine to four million people, addressing river blindness and Vitamin A deficiency in children. They have provided spectacles and other eye care treatments to over 600,000 people.

SiB next aim is to raise USD20mn to deliver comprehensive eye care services to 20 million people in the underprivileged areas of 20 cities, which you can help towards!
