The statistics on blindness are staggering, but people don’t go blind by the million- they go blind one by one.

For each person the impact is enormous. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood.

MARTIN EDGE (Managing Director within Standard Chartered’s Corporate Advisory & Finance Africa division) is tackling the hills and valleys of Kwazulu Natal Province in the “Sani2C” ("Sani-to-Sea”) mountain biking race for a good cause: the Bank’s Seeing is Believing campaign.

This is Martin’s first multi-day competition, having already accomplished 6 Argus Races, Johannesburg’s arduous ’94.7 Challenge’ and the ‘Grace to Grace’ adventure race, to name a few. Martin achieved ‘celebrity status’ in his last Argus Race, by riding in the same team as Francois Pienaar (ex SA Rugby Captain) and Matt Damon (Hollywood Actor)!

This year the Sani2C is taking place in May for the first time, to avoid the March rains which last year flooded the route. This means the event will be a lot colder, but for Martin’s sake, will hopefully offer fewer Black Mamba sightings (one of the world’s most venomous snakes)! Sani2C is 3 long days of offroad adventure cycling, kick starting in the Drakensberg, then meandering through the picturesque farms in the Midlands followed by a little ‘ploughing’ through the suger-cane plantations, before finally finishing on KZN’s sunny South Coast beach. The riders complete 4 000m of vertical ascent over the race's 265km, with Day 2 being the most terrifyingly arduous.

Martin will be cycling with his partner, Gerrie, who has flown out from Atlanta Georgia to participate in this increasingly internationally renowned race (televised on DStv’s Supersport Cycling) - Race Rules dictate that partners need to remain within 5 minutes of each other throughout. Martin and Gerrie understand that equipment is key to your success, and have painstakingly built their bikes from scratch – assembling each nut and bolt by hand. Mechanical breakdowns should thus not obstruct their view of the finish line, but rather ensure that personal strength and stamina remain their primary focus!

Martin reports that his training began well at the start of the year but was badly interrupted recently by business trips and a family holiday in Morocco. He admits to being nervous, but hopes to cross the finish line in one piece – Now all he needs is generous sponsorship to ensure the race not only delivers dividends on a personal front, but also brings sight and eyecare to deserving members of our community.
