Steve Bertamini's Seeing is Believing

28 February 2010

The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.

Join the Race, Feel the Energy – this is the slogan for the 2010 Hong Kong Marathon.  This year I too will be joining the race and feeling the energy – all for a good cause; I’ve signed up for the Leader’s Cup – a 2km dash introduced last year for senior executives, community leaders and celebrities to help raise money for Seeing is Believing.

On 28 February I will be waiting for the starter gun along with Ben Hung, CEO Hong Kong; Lim Cheng Teck, CEO China; and Julian Fong, CFO Asia to make up a total of 50 runners.  The Bank will match every dollar raised and I have committed to raising at least US$2.50 for every meter I run - so that’s a minimum of US$5,000 towards Seeing is Believing.  Below are some examples of the impact US$5,000 can achieve:
- 263 boxes of sutures;
- 2,380 plastic eye shields;
- 278 pairs of spectacles;
- 555 blindness preventing trichiasis operations;
- 167 sight saving cataract operations; or
- 65 sight screenings for schools – that’s the equivalent of 6,500 children.

Thank you for your support

Steve

    I am making this donation on behalf of twin 8 year old daughters Anya and Riya. From their childhood they have always felt very sad when they saw blind children. It made them very sad to think that the only colour these children ever saw was black and that they dint even know what their mommy and daddy look like. The Seeing is Believing initiative is something that means a great deal to all of us in our family and I am very proud to be a part of an organisation that does such great work from its heart. Best of Luck Steve. We will be cheering you on in spirit from sunny Singapore. Donated by richa goswami 23 Feb 2010
