Trevor Haeger's Seeing is Believing
2 March 2010
About my charity
The statistics on blindness are staggering. But people do not go blind by the million, they go blind one by one, and for each person the impact is enormous. Poverty and blindness are a formidable combination, depriving many people in the developing world of basic human rights. Loss of sight often results in social exclusion, making blind people vulnerable to abuse, poverty and early death. Less than half of all children who lose their sight will survive to adulthood. The figures appear overwhelming, yet providing help is simple.
Dear friends and colleagues,
I have always had a plan to visit the Himalayas at some point and have decided to make 2010 the year for that purpose. Going to see some of the most beautiful scenery on earth, it seems wholly appropriate to seek to raise some money towards Standard Chartered's main charity, Seeing is Believing. However, recognising that some may not see a holiday trek as a justifiable charity raising event, I have set myself the personal challenge of climbing Island Peak, a well known trekking peak in the Himalayas. Island peak is 6,189m high, somehwat higher than Everest base camp at 5,380m and also higher than Africa's Kilimanjaro at 5,895m. Crampons and Ice Axe are apparently required, although I'm assured training will be provided on arrival - important as I have no prior climbing experience. It is not really possible to train for the high altitude (particularly here in Singapore), although I have been using the Bukit Timah nature reserve, which boasts Singapore's highest point, peaking at a rather modest 163m. Going up and down 5 or 6 times a session can be a little boring though. Weekend 13th March therefore, some of my colleagues from work will be joining me in climbing Mt Kinabalu 4,095m (the highest South East Asia peak), which will be a good test of my preparation to date.
I leave for Kathmandu on 9th April and hope the training I have done over the last 3 months will be sufficient, although I can't predict how I will handle the altitude.
Any donation will be gratefully received, and of course remember every dollar raised is matched by Standard Chartered, doubling the impact we can make.
Many thanks for your support and best regards,
Trevor

Fantastic! I like your theory of training Bukit Timah Hill - just think of Island Peak as 38 digestible Bukit Timah Hill chunks and you'll smash it! So... I'd probably give you a tenner for to climb Bukit Timah hill (only if you did it in your full Island Peak climbing kit with crampons, ice axe etc!) so the donation reflects the multiplier! :-) Have a great trip!
